Beat the Heat in Your Garage

As summer heats up, so does your garage! If your garage doubles as a workshop, a gym, a bar, or even extra storage, you’ll be looking for ways to keep the space cool and comfortable. But as temperatures continue to rise above 85 degrees, don’t be tempted to drop a lot of dough on a fancy garage air conditioning unit. Instead, read on to learn some easy cooling tips.
5 Ways to Keep Your Garage Cool This Summer
1. Open Your Garage Door
One of the easiest ways to cool down your garage is to open the door, especially if you don’t have a window in your garage. Leave the door open during the cooler parts of the morning or the later hours of the evening, and the cool air will begin to circulate into that hot space. You can also place a few fans near the opening of the door to move the air a little quicker.
If you find you’re leaving your door open quite a bit during the summer, consider purchasing a screen for the door that fits over the entire opening. These screens allow air to move in while keeping pests out, such as rodents, bugs, and neighbors.
2. Purchase Large Fans
This is a great option if you’d rather not keep your garage door open but are looking for a way to circulate the air. Large box fans will work, or you can install a circular fan on the wall to keep walkways and floor space clear. You can also consider purchasing a smart plug and turning your fans on and off remotely using your phone.
3. Declutter your garage
The more open space you have in your garage, the easier it is for the air to flow through the entire thing. If you have boxes stacked in the middle or along the walls, this can clog up airways and vents and keep your garage from cooling, especially if you are trying to cool it using a fan.
4. Place a dehumidifier in your garage
The humidity in the Wisconsin summer can take any temperature and make it feel extra swampy. Drying the air in your garage will immediately make it feel cooler while also helping to reduce any humidity damage to your belongings. Combine the dehumidifier with a fan, and you can weather those hot summer days no problem.
5. Check and replace your weatherstripping
The small piece of rubber between the bottom of your garage door and the concrete is called the weatherstripping. Over time, it begins to crack, tear, and wear out. Consider having this piece of rubber replaced on your door. This will help keep hot air out of your garage and cool air in. In the winter, it will do the opposite. (Call Jim’s, and we’ll happily come replace your weatherstripping in no time!)
