Winterizing Your Garage

Winterize garage door

That first crisp breeze of Fall just blew in. You’ve set your mums on your front stoop, dusted off and displayed that Fall decor, and baked a pumpkin flavored thing or two. The last thing you want to think about is when that Old Man Winter is coming a-knocking. But we assure you, though he seems a long way off, in the lovely state of Wisconsin, he’ll be here before you can say Trick-or-Treat.

Now is the Time

While the weather is fine and the leaves are just starting to fall, now is the time that you should winterize that garage of yours. When the first flurry flies, it'll be too late.

Not to fret, grab that pumpkin latte, don that lightweight sweater and in one Saturday’s afternoon, your garage can be as ready for winter as Santa in his sleigh.

Steps to Winterizing Your Garage

1. Clean your garage

It’s not quite time to put the mower away, but you can slide that kiddie pool in the rafters alongside those life jackets. The sand toys, gardening supplies and hoses can also be stashed, and the floor of the garage could use a good sweep. Toss out old things that you’re not using anymore and organize the things that you haven’t had a chance to put back in place. Dedicate a small space for wet boots, coats and hats and there you go! Voila, clean!

2. Repair or replace weatherstripping on garage door

Take a quick little look at the long rubber piece at the bottom of your door. Check for any damage in the form of cracks or breaks. This little guy takes the brunt of the weight of your door when opening and closing. It also protects your garage from bugs, water and debris. Fill holes or decide if it needs replacing altogether. You and Youtube can replace the weatherstripping if you’re up for it, or else give us a call!

3. Check other doors and windows for holes or gaps

Inspecting the seals around all doors and windows will ensure that your garage will stay as warm as possible through all kinds of storms and conditions. Fill holes with putty or replace the seals where needed. Consider replacing windows that are old or thin and make sure your service door has a proper seal underneath.

4. Inspect your garage door’s moving parts

Peek at the metal track on your ceiling, the rollers that move the door, and the operator that lifts your door. Make sure all parts are working correctly and smoothly. Look at the electric eyes at the bottom of your door. Make sure they are properly secured and clean. If you see anything concerning give us a call!

5. Consider insulating your garage and your garage door

This is a project for a dedicated homeowner. With the help of a trusty hardware store, you can get the supplies you need to add insulation to all areas of your garage. While this might take a little longer than a Saturday afternoon, you will reap the benefits all year long. Insulation will likely reduce the cost of your HVAC bills and keep your garage noticeably toastier. This is especially helpful if your garage doubles as another space such as a home gym or garage bar.
